Discovering–and Re-discovering–the Joy of Reading

The 2017-18 Read Across America Calendar is here!

The calendar, which we’re promoting with our fantastic partner, Reading is Fundamental, highlights the diverse books available to a wide range of readers. The inspiring options on the list will help students see themselves in the stories and introduce them to the diversity of people, ideas, and perspectives across our nation and throughout the world.

Here are a just a few of the wonderful options:

·        Her Right Foot, by Dave Eggers, which tells the story of the Statue of Liberty from a unique angle

·        Preaching to the Chickens: The Story of Young John Lewis, by Jabari Asim, a glimpse into the boyhood of the Civil Rights legend and Congressman

·        The Three Lucys, by Hayan Charara, about a young boy in a small Lebanon town during the 2006 Hezbollah-Israeli conflict

From the beginning, Read Across America has been an incredible vehicle for focusing attention on literacy. It’s successful because it helps educators build relationships that reading is part of. Bonds are created between students and their teachers, librarians, parents, and classroom volunteers. You can order copies of the calendar here.

The calendar also includes ideas for thought-provoking and fun activities based on the featured books. Here’s another benefit: Adult readers are just as inspired by Read Across America as our students. The activities that highlight reading, plus our students’ excitement, help us grownups rediscover the joy of reading and exploration all over again.

Good reading skills are the cornerstone to success. Developing these skills puts students on the pathway to a lifetime of learning and adventure, and providing a diverse array of book titles goes a long way toward cultivating their interests. When students have an array of books from which to choose, they are more likely to enjoy the experience and keep at it.
